Unfair billing practices and deceptive advertizing of acai berry products and so called colon cleansers has led to over 2800 complaints sent to the Better Business Bureau. The bureau has named these “free acai berry” scams one of the “Top 10 Scams and Rip Offs of 2009”.
These companies have offered free trials of the pills, but in reality it has been extremely difficult for people to avoid paying between $39.95 to $59.95 for the products. The free trials led to a full price purchase without permission of the “buyer”. And it has been impossible to opt out of this. The companies has failed to disclose terms and conditions of the trial programs, membership programs, and additional charges. Also celebs like Ophra Winfrey has been used in the marketing of these acai products, without asking for permission first.
Steve Cox, BBB spokesperson says: “Many businesses across the country are using the same selling model for their acai products: they lure customers in with celebrity endorsements and free trial offers, and then lock them in by making it extremely difficult to cancel the automatic delivery of more acai products every month.”
These companies have now been ordered by an US districts court to stop all internet sales. This is seen my the weight loss supplements industry as an important first step in cleaning out all non-serious and downright scammy merchants.
We welcome this and we believe it will make people more willing to shop online. Buying health products should be fun and safe. Please do you best to aviod scammy acai products and only buy Real Pure Acai Berry.
